Phil Mickleson There has been more column inches written about Tiger Woods Knee surgery than there has been about any other golfer teeing it up this week at the years 2nd major.

Woods ( if you read what you beleive ) has not walked 18 holes of golf in the 8 weeks since his surgery on his troublesome left knee. He has only played 9 practise holes on this newly lengthened and toughened up Torrey Pines course, and that was in a buggy !!

Whatever you read or think you cannot ignore tha stats about the greatest player this game has ever seen. He has won the last 4 times he has teed it up at this course, winning by an incredible 8 shots here earlier in the year. He is the best player in the field by a country mile when fully fit, and will love this new test of a course he loves. However I see big chinks in his armour this year. first off is his break, He has had time off before and won, but surely he cannot be on top of his game with such a lack of competitive golf, and if he is fully fit, whi hasn't he played more than 9 practice holes. He will surely need to know what changes they have made to his favourite course, and how they effect his game plan ?

The other thing that I think Tiger will struggle with this week is the driving part of his game. He is ranked in the 140's of this part of his game, and when you are wayward on a US open course it really tests you as they let the rough grow properly over here and it isn't unknown for the ball not to be found on may occasions.

Phil Mickleson however is really playing well this year. The San Diego resident has won twice this year, had a good solid 5th in the Masters and was 6th behind Tiger here earlier in the year. He is also a wayward driver of the ball, but with the current form he is in, he will be able to cope with the wayward shots a lot better than a rusty Tiger. He has had his typical pre major routine of missing out on the tournament before hand and was a solid 20th the previous week and of course won the Northern Trust before that.

Form wise you have to have this bet as I cannot have it that Tiger will be fit enough and ready enough to do himself justive over 72 of the hardest holes in golf against the 2nd best player in the world who is right at the top of his game.
